Presenter Bios:

James Provenza, JD, CPA, Provenza Consulting - James Provenza is president and attorney at James C Provenza, PC.   He practices in nonprofit law and consulting, including Board training, strategic planning and planned giving consulting.  He also assists organizations in obtaining and maintaining tax-exempt status.  He also practices in estate planning and administration.  He joined Payson Wild to form Single Source Advancement Network (now Provenza Consulting) to help bring historically scattered services to nonprofit organizations.   He is a member of American Institute of CPA’s, Illinois State Bar Association Trusts and Estates Section, and the Chicago Council on Planned Giving.  He is a past president of the Estate Planning Committee at the Northwest Suburban Bar Association, and has spoken to numerous groups about various nonprofit and estate planning issues, including the Illinois CPA Society and the Chicago Council on Planned Giving. He is former President and a founding member of Northern Illinois Planned Giving Council in Rockford and is a member of the Crusader Health Foundation Planned Giving Advisory Committee (Rockford) and the Salvation Army of Chicago Planned Giving Advisory Committee.   He is also past president of the Glenview Northbrook Kiwanis Club.

Cynthia L. Schmidt, CFRE, Chief Development Officer, Holy Family Ministries -- Cynthia Schmidt has been a part of the Chicago philanthropic community for nearly 25 years. She has helped organizations in all key areas of major gift giving, including individuals, corporate and foundation partnerships, creating successful annul fund, endowment fund and capital campaigns. She has organized Board development programs as a means for organizations to expand resources and strengthen mission. Currently she is the Chief Development Officer for Holy Family Ministries, leading their first ever $5M Endowment Campaign, along with managing the annual fund and providing support to the Board of Directors. Previously Cynthia was the founding Chief Development Officer and Campaign Director for the historic Association House of Chicago, one of the oldest and largest of the original settlement houses, founded by Jane Addams. She led the organization in their first ever major gifts initiative, directing their $10M combined campaign Opening Doors for a New Century, which exceeded goal. Cynthia was formerly the Vice President for Development of the Midwest Regional Office of the National Trust for Historic Preservation (Chicago). Cynthia is a past President of the Chicago Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), the leading professional organization focused on the advancement of philanthropy and ethical fundraising. She currently serves on the Board of the AFP International Foundation for Philanthropy. She is a member of Chicago Women in Philanthropy (CWIP), Women in Development Professions-Chicago (WDIP) and Chicago Council on Planned Giving (CCPG).

Payson S. Wild, Jr., CFRE, President, Wild Associates, Inc.; a partner of Provenza Consulting - Payson Wild founded Wild Associates, now affiliated with Provenza Consulting, and a partner in Single Source Advancement Network. Single Source consolidates historically scattered development and planned giving services, communications and products and provides them to not-for-profit organizations. Prior to the formation of Wild Associates, Payson was a Senior Vice President with The Alford Group, a national consulting firm. Previously, he served as Director of Planned Giving at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. During his tenure, he established the first formal planned giving program for any orchestra in the United States and provided direction for the CSO’s $30 million endowment campaign that resulted in $32 million in commitments. Payson began his development career at Northwestern University in Alumni Relations. He became Director of Capital and Estate Planning at Illinois Institute of Technology and directed the planned giving program that obtained over $20 million in alumni gifts. Earlier, he was Assistant Director of Development at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s (Rush University) Medical Center in Chicago. Payson has also worked in airline and railroad management and taught in public schools and served in the U.S. Army Reserve Transportation Corps. He has served as President of the School of Education and Social Policy Board of the Northwestern Alumni Association. He was a trustee of the Evanston Community Foundation and was a board member of the Chicago Council on Planned Giving, of which he is a founder and 2015 recipient of the Heintzelman Service Award. He was formerly on the boards of Northlight Theatre, the Monmouth College Alumni Association and the Evanston Historical Society (History Center), where he is a Past President and Trustee Emeritus.
