10:30 – 11:45 AM Morning Session

Unfortunately, due to a personal situation that developed over this past weekend, our originally scheduled presenter, Laura Hansen Dean, is unable to fly to Chicago today. In her stead, we are fortunate that Robert Shafis, Director of Major and Planned Giving at The Field Museum will be presenting

TOPIC:
Accelerating Planned Gifts Into Current Money-or Irrevocable Commitments: 0-60 Before the Gift “Matures”.

SUMMARY: Planned Gifts are an important part of the philanthropic mix, but you have to wait SO LONG to get them.  The average life expectancy of a planned gift is often 20 years or more, so how do you get donors to experience the joy of giving while they still can?  Bob explores methods to get traditionally revocable and irrevocable commitments converted into present day cash and irrevocable gifts, including using tax strategies to make major gifts out of traditionally planned gift assets, blending planned and major gift strategies to generate current income, and using old planned giving techniques in new ways.

SPEAKER: Robert Shafis, Director of Major & Planned Giving, The Field Museum
For over 25 years, Robert Shafis has been a successful fundraiser, speaker and attorney.

Bob worked in major and planned gifts at LCMS Foundation; the Alzheimer’s Association, a major hospital system; a medical research group; and The Museum of Science and Industry, where he participated in a successful campaign raising over $200 million.

He is currently Director of Major and Planned Giving at The Field Museum, which has embarked on a $250 million campaign.  Bob often speaks about major and planned giving, charitable tax issues, and the process of fundraising.  He teaches major and planned giving at North Park University.

Mr. Shafis will also be the recipient of the Jonathan Heintzelman Award

12:15 – 1:30 PM Afternoon Session
