Deeds and Misdeeds: Navigating Gifts of Real Estate
Want to turn dirt into dollars? Real estate is often a donor’s most valuable (and underutilized) asset, but accepting property isn’t always as simple as cashing a check. This session will explore how to make the case for real estate gifts, the building blocks of a successful program, and the common landmines to avoid. Spoiler: it’s less about location, location, location, and more about preparation, preparation, preparation.

Marcus A. Knotts, J.D., Senior Vice President, Development, Purdue for Life Foundation
As Senior Vice President, Development at the Purdue for Life Foundation, Marcus
oversees the Office of Planned Giving, a role that requires equal parts circus management, group therapy, and legal interpretation. He also serves the Foundation’s senior leadership team where his chief contributions include raising inconvenient questions and reminding everyone that “technically, we can’t do that.” On his second tour of duty with Purdue, Marcus has guided Planned Giving for nearly fifteen years and is still searching for the moment when it all starts to make sense.

Help Me Help You: Effective Collaboration Between Attorneys and Planned Giving Officers
Kirk Hoopingarner and Neil Kawashima will discuss ways estate planning attorneys can assist in the planned giving process.  This will include real life examples of ways Neil and Kirk have aided their clients in making meaningful charitable donations, including legacy gifts, and ways planned giving officers have greatly assisted in this process.  Neil and Kirk will include thoughts on stewardship provisions and related monitoring and enforcement of donations, management of endowments, and the dynamics of family philanthropy, including private foundation succession governance and the growing world of donor advised funds.
